What a page turner! Michael Connelly never disappoints me.
A legal thriller about a defense attorney called Mickey Haller who works out of his Lincoln town car and does not much mind if his client is criminal. What he most dreads is an innocent client.

Mickey gets a “franchise client” who is willing to pay good money. A LA real estate playboy accused of brutally attacking a prostitute. This looks like a fast, too straight a case but soon Haller finds himself in a good mess and things are not what they seem to be. But Haller has his tactics. He is sleek. The tension at the end was stomach knotting and I totally loved it.

Completely immersing and compelling read. Hope the next ones are as good as this one 🙂

Spare by Prince Harry

SpareSpare by Prince Harry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 stars

memoir(noun) – a book or other piece of writing based on the writer’s personal knowledge of famous people, places, or events.

No idea why people have hard time accepting about mental illness or traumas, even when the person suffering is asking for help. Is it because it is not visible, like bleeding wound or a broken bone? This book is about Prince Harry’s “princely” experience of being born a royal. Clearly its his side of story, he is not talking for other royal members, he is just telling what happened , how he felt. And if this is what he felt, then who are we to judge.

Harry shares his life in 3 phases.
First phase-His childhood starting from his mother’s death , dealing with the shock, school, college with a void for his mother along with paps.
Second phase-His army career. His trips to Africa. His failing romances. Dealing with paps.
Third phase-He finding Meghan. Him falling in love, leading to marriage and fatherhood. Him stepping back from royal duties. Dealing with paps.

Harry has shared so much about his life, his feelings about others, his hatred towards paps (seriously what has journalism fallen down to?), his hatred towards being royal first and family later. This book shows how much Harry does not care anymore. Its like a open war saying you made money out of lies about me. Now see how much will the truth cost. His outright revolt against the way the royals work, the tabloids in UK works and most of all, for being invalidated by his own family. As Harry says, every member has been abused by these lies told by press, but just to remain in news one cannot let lies to be spread and fool people. I am pretty sure that the “Palace” is silent on the release of this memoir and any news being printed is just hocus pocus 🙂

Wonderfully written, so raw, though its only one sided story, it is a very powerful one.
Short chapters , very well narrated and vulnerable.

I bought this book for my kid and he loved it very much. He was showing off by throwing out facts from the book which made me read it. This looks like the kinder version of the book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind which I had read and very much appreciated last year.

Its written in a way that makes it easy for kids to understand with very nice kid friendly illustrations. Hoping for the Volume II to come out soon.

The Well of Ascension(Mistborn, #2) by Brandon Sanderson

The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2)The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 stars
Story starts shortly after the end of book one. The Lord Ruler is dead. Eland is the new king who has written down a set of laws for the benefit of his kingdom. People are confused as they dont know where they stand and how their new existence will matter! Also, a new religion is bubbling up that worships Kelsier ‘The Survivor’ and his heir, Vin. And what not, several armies are attacking upon the capital to seize the fabled “Atium” reserves of the Lord Ruler.

Now it’s in Vin and co.’s hands to do what Kelsier had started and had a vision about. It’s chaos and a battle of power. But here Mistborn and their super powers are not the sole focus of the story. There are other factors including politics which will get a readers attention.

Written wonderfully with a lot of attention to characters (diverse) and many storylines stemming ahead making way for the third book. After reading this book, I came to realize why not a 5 stars from me !! This world does not have a cozy spot. I would not like to live in a world like this and the description of noblemen’s houses and balls did not appeal to me.
Anyways, it was a nice interesting read with good plot and twists. Looking forward to read the next in line.

The Final Empire(Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson

The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1)The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 stars
A world haunted by mists at night and raining ash in the day, where the common people, Skaa are oppressed and Nobility of Great houses flourish by immortal Lord Ruler’s 1000 year rule. Lord ruler has gifted nobility the mystical power called Allomancy where one can burn metal inside oneself and get some supernatural powers. Some half bred Ska’s too show these mystic powers.
Kelsier, a mistborn (who can burn all the 10 metals) survives Lord Rulers pits of Hathsin ,most hellish prison. He forms a group with Vin (another ska mistborn) and other mistings (his old thieving friends) and plans to destroy the nobility, the empire and the Lord Ruler himself.

The plot is very good, especially the starting and the end. The middle was a bit dull where there were only plans and things moved a bit slow. It was funny how Kelsier’s secret meetings reminded me of my own team meetings. A captivating world with complex magic system and wonderful characters. Looking forward to reading the second book in this series

The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times by Michelle Obama

The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain TimesThe Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times by Michelle Obama
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 stars
It is one of the best books that I have read this year. Michelle Obama is one of the ladies whom I look up to or idealize.

In this book we get to see Michelle with her all sides and in almost all the phases of her life. How her parents helped her to be what she became, a strong soul. Her schooling, college and studying law, meeting Mr. Obama and the marriage, the problems that a couple faces and parenting which are all similar to any common man/woman’s issues in a normal life. She had it to another level with her husband contesting for US President and winning to be POTUS not once but twice, which is not so common man/woman issue.

It was enlightening as well as inspiring to know that no matter who you are, where you come from, a person will go through similar emotions in their lives. And we all cope with these emotions in our own way , taking our own time. This book instills hope in a dreary world of social media abuse. It tells us to move forward , find a way to navigate stress no matter what. It spreads positivity and joy in world which is spreading negativity and despair at every step and find your own light.

I would highly recommend this book which explores several topics like self exploration, friendship, family, parenting , self esteem, stress , anxiety, fear, growth and so on and so forth. Inspiring read!!

The Body: A Guide for Occupants by Bill Bryson

The Body: A Guide for OccupantsThe Body: A Guide for Occupants by Bill Bryson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 stars

This was a horrendously informative read. The author tackles the human body from top to bottom, of course the important parts or the fascinating ones. He also talks about the medical/medicine history. Every chapter had something interesting to tell, statistics on how it was before and now or how it differs from country to country or region. The baffling power of our body and mind. The myths or legends which are still haunting our society.

The most cringe worthy parts were two in this book,
1)The tests that were done on humans with new medicines along with surgeries (thank the lord, i am not a medical person. I m a coward).
2)How so many medicines we are taking now, are still not the exact solution for the ailments.

Well researched, each chapter tells us not about a body part but also the medical history, politics involved, experiments done etc which was very interesting. Even after these many years of research on human body and as human residing inside a body, we almost know nothing much concrete about it. Body keeps amazing us.

Hickory Dickory Dock (Hercule Poirot #27) by Agatha Christie

Hickory Dickory Dock (Hercule Poirot, #34)Hickory Dickory Dock by Agatha Christie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I don’t know from which book in the series Mr. Poirot got a secretary, but I liked her. Strong and practical woman with no nonsense at all.
Mystery is in a hostel on Hickory road where Secretary Miss.Lemons sister’s is a warden. At first Poirot’s opinion is asked as odd set of things were going missing but then Poirot was interfering as deaths started to take place.
It was a good book with its own set of twists and turns. It kept me with it till the end but not one of the best Christie stories.

Marple: Twelve New Mysteries by Various

Marple: Twelve New MysteriesMarple: Twelve New Mysteries by Naomi Alderman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 stars
Twelve different contemporary female crime writers come together to write short stories recreating Agatha Christie’s Miss. Marple. There are some good ones and some attempts to reconstruct Miss Marple. I would say, none of them had Christie’s charm, but their own.
1.Evil in Small Places by Lucy Foley – 4 stars
Miss Marple visits Mrs. Prudence, an old school friend and solves a mystery of town’s opera singer. It was good and had a bit of Miss Marple feel to it.

2.The Second Murder at the Vicarage by Val McDermid – 3 stars
Mary, former maid, ends up dead on the kitchen floor of the Vicarage. It was a good plot but felt a bit clumsy to me (if compared to Miss. Marple books), but nevertheless It was a fine read.

3.Miss Marple Takes Manhattan by Alyssa Cole- 2 stars
It was nothing like our old Miss. Marple. Raymond, Joan, and Miss Marple are in Manhattan to watch a drama based on Raymond’s book. And an attempt to murder brings out Miss. Marple’s deduction skills to find the culprit.

4.The Unravelling by Natalie Haynes – 4 stars
A long time after the war, Mr. Weaver has returned to his wife and son at St. Mary Mead. But then a Pig Keeper called Martin is found dead after having an argument with Mr. Weaver. And Mr. Weaver was arrested. But Miss. Marple has a precise idea on what actually happened here. It was a well written plot and I liked it.

5.Miss Marple’s Christmas by Ruth Ware – 4 stars
Miss. Marple is visiting Dolly Bantry at Christmas along with Raymond and Joan. But Colonel Bantry has also invited tiresome Carltons. Soon a set of pearls belonging to Mrs. Carlton goes missing. And suspicion fall on Bantry’s servants which puts pressure on Colonel Bantry to pay up for the missing pearls. Miss. Marple has some thinking to do to solve the crime. It had a very cozy feel and one could feel Ruth ware really likes these mysteries.

6.The Open Mind by Naomi Alderman – 1 stars
Miss Marple, as an invited guest for the Founder’s Day lunch at Oxford (not acceptable at all, what is she even doing there!!). And a very rude man who is the head of some departments falls dead at the dinner table. All around the table are suspects as almost everyone of them had a motive/grudge against him. I didn’t like it a bit. It was more like Poirot than Miss. Marple.

7.The Jade Empress by Jean Kwok -3.5 stars
Miss Marple is travelling to Hong Kong on a ship called Jade Empress. She is introduced to an elderly man as a dance partner. But soon he is dead and in a day his companion is also found stabbed. Finally the Man’s daughter is the one who gets arrested for both the murders as she is the one who has the most benefits from the deaths. But Miss. Marple feels that the girl loved them both and could not have killed them. Miss. Marple sets out to find the real murderer. It was a good story, had a feel of Miss. Marple except maybe her travelling to Hong Kong.

8.A Deadly Wedding Day by Dreda Say Mitchell – 2.5 stars
Miss. Marple is attending a wedding where a unknown woman falls dead but the groom’s parents insists that she has only fainted and will be on her feet in no time. No one is sure on who she is and what is her connection to the wedding. Or are they lying? It was ok-ish read. I just found the (view spoiler) a bit bizarre.

9.Murder at the Villa Rosa by Elly Griffiths – 1 star
I have read Elly Griffiths other books and I have liked them all. But this one is a total Nay. The story reminded me of Elly Griffiths and nothing about Miss. Marple. Nothing. An author is staying at a retreat to get over his writer’s block. But he finds himself around strange circumstances and gets confused , questioning his own sanity. Finally, Miss. Marple is able to give some explanation on what is really happening.

10.The Murdering Sort by Karen McManus – 4 stars
Miss. Marple’s Niece, Nicola is invited to her friend’s birthday party. Diana’s grand father is a bit paranoid and suspects each family member on endangering his life. And he dies during the party and each family member is a suspect. It was a good mystery.

11.The Mystery of the Acid Soil by Kate Mosse – 4 stars
During a train travel, Miss. Marple’s travel companion shows his concern on his lady friend’s disappearance. Miss. Marple is further intrigued after hearing the death of this Lady Companion’s mother’s death and her doctor’s death within days. But Miss. Marple is sorting out the mystery slowly but in time. It was a fun mystery with a good plot. Liked it.

12.The Disappearance by Leigh Bardugo – 5 stars
I am a fan of Leigh Bardugo on her fantasy series. But I never knew she could write Miss. Marple so well. This was the only story (for me) which came near to the real Miss. Marple books. Loved it.
Dolly Bantry, calls Miss. Marple to come back from London to sort out a mystery. A young man is gone missing just a week before his wedding and some jewels have gone missing. Miss. Marple do find out what has happened and does find out the truth.

It was almost there but not completely. I have very mixed feeling on the stories and summing up it is an enjoyable read.

The Ink Black Heart(Cormoran Strike #6) by Robert Galbraith

The Ink Black Heart (Cormoran Strike, #6)The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Stars
Ink Black Heart, the 6th book in the much loved Cormoran Strike series is an amazing piece of writing. The story begins where the story stopped in 5th book with both Robin and Strike enjoying dinner at the Ritz for Robin’s 30th birthday.

Edie Ledwell, one of the creators of YouTube animated series “The Ink Black Heart” approached Strike’s agency to find out her online tormentor, “Anomie”. But since they were full and did not have IT expertise in hand, Robin rejects the client. But she is devastated to find out about Edie Ledwell’s murder the very next day. And soon Strike & Robin’s assistance is asked by Edie’s agent and family to find out about “Anomie”.

What unfolds is the horrendous nature of chat rooms, social media and the issue of internet hate. JKR is the master of story telling. She has put out the existence of toxicity in Twitter and other such social media platforms so beautifully. And the characters were so many , so many suspects having both an offline and online persona, it was truly skillful of the author to maintain the plot among these.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and no, I couldn’t guess the killer. It was worth the read (900+ pages). Absolutely fabulous read. Can’t wait for the next installment!
