Cora is suffering severe trauma from her adventure in the Moors. She decides that the only way to save herself is to transfer to the Whitethorn Institute. Though Eleanor West advices her to rethink her idea, she transfers herself into this Institute.

Cora finds it unwelcoming, mean and she starts to feel like a prisoner. Soon she finds out that not only her but everyone is a prisoner and all are living a lie. And with the help of old & new friends she escapes Whitethorn Institute.

In this book we don’t visit any new whimsical bizarre world, but still loved the characters and the slow growing friendship and trust. Good profound writing style. Loved this short read.

It was like a small recap of Down among the sticks and bones (Book 2) with Jack and Jill.

Jill was the girly type with pretty clothes and Jack was more of the masculine type and a tom boy. The story picks up from where the Every heart a Doorway left off, Jack and Jill are at Moors, Jack kills Jill preventing her from becoming a vampire. Jack calls for the Door and hopes that everything will go back to normal at home.

“We can be sad and we can be hurt and we can even be killed, but the world keeps turning, and the things we’re supposed to do keep needing to be done.”

But Here in this book, Jack returns to Eleanor West’s school for Wayward children, but something is really messed up. Jack is inside Jill’s body. Her Body is back at Moors and is used by Jill. Now Jack takes help of her friends and goes back to Moors to bring back what is hers.

“Every monster has its natural counterbalance. Vampires and mad scientists are well-matched enough to keep the peace, even if it’s sometimes kept in pieces.”

As ususal, unusual writing with bizarre plot and a lot of action. I loved this book.

We are introduced to Katherine Lundy. Lundy is an adult stuck in a child’s body at Eleanor West’s school for Wayward children. But she has a backstory.

Lundy is a quiet girl, daughter of the headmaster of the school so without friends. She accidentally stumbles on a Door that leads her to a Goblin Market. This world is set on rules and bargains. Lundy is great at making bargains and everytime she leaves Goblin Market she thinks its for the last time. But again and again she is lured back to this world of bargain.

“Sometimes ‘fair’ is bigger than just you. Sometimes ‘fair’ has to think about what’s best for everyone.”

Her father knows about this world as he too had stumbled upon it in his childhood. He tries to stop her but never succeeds. Lundy loves her sister at home and Moon her best friend at Goblin Market. Lundy’s downfall starts when she takes on Moon’s bargains and also wants to stay with her sister to know her. Lundy is trapped where she wants to keep both her friend Moon and Sister.

“What’s the Goblin Market?”
“It is a place where dreamers go when they don’t fit in with the dreams their homes think worth dreaming. Doors lead here. Perhaps you found one.”

It is a heartbreaking and moving tale and a really really good one till now in the series.

This was a bit off for me, if the previous books in the series are considered.

“We’re all puzzle boxes, skeleton and skin, soul and shadow.”

Rini has fallen from the sky into a pond at Eleanor West’s school for wayward children. She is searching for her mother Sumi who vanished few days ago. Rini is from Confection, a world where logic is illogical and nothing makes sense. Rini finds out that Sumi ( murdered in Book 1 ) is dead before Rini is conceived, but time doesn’t work at Confection as it works in this real world.

Now along with Kade and Christopher ( from Book 1 ), Cora- a plus sized girl struggling with anxiety , Nadia- who is missing an arm and trying to find her door, Rini embarks on a quest to save her mother and to save her world Confection.

“There is kindness in the world, if we know how to look for it. If we never start denying it the door.”

I coudn’t make head or tail at some parts but that’s ok since story is based on a world so illogical. A very good setting with several relatable and diverse teenage characters.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

Down among the Sticks and Bones follows up with Jack and Jill, twin girls who have a backstory. They are already the part of the Magical school and it’s them we follow. Jack and Jill are made to follow what their parents wanted which suffocated them. Soon they find a doorway to another world, Moors. Here they belong.

“Every choice feeds every choice that comes after, whether we want those choices or no.”

In Moors, Jack can be an apprentice to a mad scientist and Jill can be a daughter to a deadly Vampire. In Moors everything is about balance. But something happens and they are sent back to normal world and they are a part of Eleanor West’s school for wayward children.

“Someone with sharp enough eyes might see the instant where one wounded heart begins to rot while the other starts to heal.”

As usual it’s eerie, gory and a unique kind of narration held everything in place for me. It also gives a stong parenting advice in guise. 🙂

It’s a portal fantasy set at a magical school which helps the children with special-eerie abilities to find the door to the right world where they actually belong.

“Because hope is a knife that can cut through the foundations of the world.”

Nancy is sent to this magical boarding school which is under the care of the headmistress, Eleanor West. With in days of Nancy’s arrival a student is murdered. And Nancy becomes an object of suspicion. Soon the school becomes a murder spot with a string of murders which Nancy and her friends are determined to solve.

“This world is unforgiving and cruel to those it judges as even the slightest bit outside the norm.”

A very unique style of narration, with a diverse set of characters, this book is a bizarre.
