Anna O by Matthew Blake

Anna O.Anna O. by Matthew Blake
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 star
It does have the essence of The Silent Patient and Gone Girl but failed to impress me like those. Even though the writing and plot was good, the execution failed. It was miserably slow till 50% and too complex climax, confusing.

Anna O went into sleep after murdering 2 of her friends at a family retreat. This is called as “Resignation Syndrome” in medical field. The police want her to wake up to be able to get into trial. Anna O is transferred to “Abbey Sleep Clinic”, a under Dr. Benedict Prince, who is a sleep expert after 4 years.

We go through different POV’s which makes the story interesting with different references to sleepwalking, crimes committed during sleep etc. Very fascinating plot but slow paced and needed more cleverer way to handle this complex plot.

The Mystery Guest (Molly the Maid, #2) by Nita Prose

The Mystery Guest (Molly the Maid, #2)The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 star

An enjoyable read. This did drag a bit where the chapters were alternating between the past and present, it felt tedious to know the backstory where there was no much mystery in the past. For a mystery it did not go well for me though it world have suited for a fiction. Molly the maid again solves the murder of a celebrated author, J. D. Grimthorpe who died during a rare public appearance to make an important announcement. Of course, he died at Regency Grand Hotel where Molly Gray is the head maid. A light read. And It could have been better.

Hickory Dickory Dock (Hercule Poirot #27) by Agatha Christie

Hickory Dickory Dock (Hercule Poirot, #34)Hickory Dickory Dock by Agatha Christie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I don’t know from which book in the series Mr. Poirot got a secretary, but I liked her. Strong and practical woman with no nonsense at all.
Mystery is in a hostel on Hickory road where Secretary Miss.Lemons sister’s is a warden. At first Poirot’s opinion is asked as odd set of things were going missing but then Poirot was interfering as deaths started to take place.
It was a good book with its own set of twists and turns. It kept me with it till the end but not one of the best Christie stories.

Marple: Twelve New Mysteries by Various

Marple: Twelve New MysteriesMarple: Twelve New Mysteries by Naomi Alderman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 stars
Twelve different contemporary female crime writers come together to write short stories recreating Agatha Christie’s Miss. Marple. There are some good ones and some attempts to reconstruct Miss Marple. I would say, none of them had Christie’s charm, but their own.
1.Evil in Small Places by Lucy Foley – 4 stars
Miss Marple visits Mrs. Prudence, an old school friend and solves a mystery of town’s opera singer. It was good and had a bit of Miss Marple feel to it.

2.The Second Murder at the Vicarage by Val McDermid – 3 stars
Mary, former maid, ends up dead on the kitchen floor of the Vicarage. It was a good plot but felt a bit clumsy to me (if compared to Miss. Marple books), but nevertheless It was a fine read.

3.Miss Marple Takes Manhattan by Alyssa Cole- 2 stars
It was nothing like our old Miss. Marple. Raymond, Joan, and Miss Marple are in Manhattan to watch a drama based on Raymond’s book. And an attempt to murder brings out Miss. Marple’s deduction skills to find the culprit.

4.The Unravelling by Natalie Haynes – 4 stars
A long time after the war, Mr. Weaver has returned to his wife and son at St. Mary Mead. But then a Pig Keeper called Martin is found dead after having an argument with Mr. Weaver. And Mr. Weaver was arrested. But Miss. Marple has a precise idea on what actually happened here. It was a well written plot and I liked it.

5.Miss Marple’s Christmas by Ruth Ware – 4 stars
Miss. Marple is visiting Dolly Bantry at Christmas along with Raymond and Joan. But Colonel Bantry has also invited tiresome Carltons. Soon a set of pearls belonging to Mrs. Carlton goes missing. And suspicion fall on Bantry’s servants which puts pressure on Colonel Bantry to pay up for the missing pearls. Miss. Marple has some thinking to do to solve the crime. It had a very cozy feel and one could feel Ruth ware really likes these mysteries.

6.The Open Mind by Naomi Alderman – 1 stars
Miss Marple, as an invited guest for the Founder’s Day lunch at Oxford (not acceptable at all, what is she even doing there!!). And a very rude man who is the head of some departments falls dead at the dinner table. All around the table are suspects as almost everyone of them had a motive/grudge against him. I didn’t like it a bit. It was more like Poirot than Miss. Marple.

7.The Jade Empress by Jean Kwok -3.5 stars
Miss Marple is travelling to Hong Kong on a ship called Jade Empress. She is introduced to an elderly man as a dance partner. But soon he is dead and in a day his companion is also found stabbed. Finally the Man’s daughter is the one who gets arrested for both the murders as she is the one who has the most benefits from the deaths. But Miss. Marple feels that the girl loved them both and could not have killed them. Miss. Marple sets out to find the real murderer. It was a good story, had a feel of Miss. Marple except maybe her travelling to Hong Kong.

8.A Deadly Wedding Day by Dreda Say Mitchell – 2.5 stars
Miss. Marple is attending a wedding where a unknown woman falls dead but the groom’s parents insists that she has only fainted and will be on her feet in no time. No one is sure on who she is and what is her connection to the wedding. Or are they lying? It was ok-ish read. I just found the (view spoiler) a bit bizarre.

9.Murder at the Villa Rosa by Elly Griffiths – 1 star
I have read Elly Griffiths other books and I have liked them all. But this one is a total Nay. The story reminded me of Elly Griffiths and nothing about Miss. Marple. Nothing. An author is staying at a retreat to get over his writer’s block. But he finds himself around strange circumstances and gets confused , questioning his own sanity. Finally, Miss. Marple is able to give some explanation on what is really happening.

10.The Murdering Sort by Karen McManus – 4 stars
Miss. Marple’s Niece, Nicola is invited to her friend’s birthday party. Diana’s grand father is a bit paranoid and suspects each family member on endangering his life. And he dies during the party and each family member is a suspect. It was a good mystery.

11.The Mystery of the Acid Soil by Kate Mosse – 4 stars
During a train travel, Miss. Marple’s travel companion shows his concern on his lady friend’s disappearance. Miss. Marple is further intrigued after hearing the death of this Lady Companion’s mother’s death and her doctor’s death within days. But Miss. Marple is sorting out the mystery slowly but in time. It was a fun mystery with a good plot. Liked it.

12.The Disappearance by Leigh Bardugo – 5 stars
I am a fan of Leigh Bardugo on her fantasy series. But I never knew she could write Miss. Marple so well. This was the only story (for me) which came near to the real Miss. Marple books. Loved it.
Dolly Bantry, calls Miss. Marple to come back from London to sort out a mystery. A young man is gone missing just a week before his wedding and some jewels have gone missing. Miss. Marple do find out what has happened and does find out the truth.

It was almost there but not completely. I have very mixed feeling on the stories and summing up it is an enjoyable read.

The Ink Black Heart(Cormoran Strike #6) by Robert Galbraith

The Ink Black Heart (Cormoran Strike, #6)The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Stars
Ink Black Heart, the 6th book in the much loved Cormoran Strike series is an amazing piece of writing. The story begins where the story stopped in 5th book with both Robin and Strike enjoying dinner at the Ritz for Robin’s 30th birthday.

Edie Ledwell, one of the creators of YouTube animated series “The Ink Black Heart” approached Strike’s agency to find out her online tormentor, “Anomie”. But since they were full and did not have IT expertise in hand, Robin rejects the client. But she is devastated to find out about Edie Ledwell’s murder the very next day. And soon Strike & Robin’s assistance is asked by Edie’s agent and family to find out about “Anomie”.

What unfolds is the horrendous nature of chat rooms, social media and the issue of internet hate. JKR is the master of story telling. She has put out the existence of toxicity in Twitter and other such social media platforms so beautifully. And the characters were so many , so many suspects having both an offline and online persona, it was truly skillful of the author to maintain the plot among these.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and no, I couldn’t guess the killer. It was worth the read (900+ pages). Absolutely fabulous read. Can’t wait for the next installment!

What She Found(Tracy Crosswhite #9) by Robert Dugoni

What She Found (Tracy Crosswhite, #9)What She Found by Robert Dugoni
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 stars

Detective Tracy Crosswhite working in the Cold cases department has agreed to look into the disappearance of investigative reporter Lisa Childress. Lisa’s daughter Anita is determined to find what happened to her mother ever after Twenty five years.

Tracy finds out that Childress’s disappearance might be related to another homicide( reported suicide) and an unreported drug raid in a marina. Soon Tracy finds herself in the middle of a story bigger than she could have imagined.

I loved the story as always. I am a big fan of Tracy Crosswhite. I love her family dynamics. I felt Tracy was more subdued and not so hot headed as in previous books. I liked her temperament here which comes with her age and as being a mom I think. Other wise the book was decent paced and immensely enjoyable.

Thank you to NetGalley, Robert Dugoni and Thomas & Mercer for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Bookshop Murder(Flora Steele Mystery #1) by Merryn Allingham

The Bookshop Murder (Flora Steele #1)The Bookshop Murder by Merryn Allingham
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 stars
I wanted to read something cozy, light and immensely enjoyable. And I picked an cozy mystery author about whom I had never heard of.

Flora Steele, a young woman who owns and runs the local book shop in a quiet, English village in the 1950’s. She is smart and determined in her life. When a mystery book writer Jack Carrington visits Flora’s bookshop, he finds a dead body behind the shelves. The police dismisses the case as “death by natural causes” but Flora suspects foul play. Flora and Jack come together to get to the bottom of this mystery. It was a bit tense in places and also scary which kept me at edge.

If you’re a fan of historical cozy mysteries, I recommend giving this first in a new series a try.

The Maid by Nita Prose

Molly Gray is socially awkward and leads a solitary life. Her dear Grandmother, who raised her, has just died. And still Molly carries on with her job as a maid in a fancy hotel. She takes delight in her cleaning work and most of her colleagues think her as a freak.

Molly finds a Mr. Black dead in his room. As said she if a bit off socially, she soon finds herself in a soup aka she is the prime suspect in Mr. Blacks’ death. Then it is up to her and her very few friends to get her out of this mess.

Molly is truly a memorable character that you can’t help but love. The first half was a bit slow but interesting and the next half was just unputdownable. Epilogue was a complete shocker.I did remember “Eleanor Oliphant” from Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine while read this book. Molly did resemble her in many ways.
A delightful cozy mystery.

Troubled Blood (Cormoran Strike, #5) by Robert Galbraith

Troubled Blood (Cormoran Strike, #5)Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

****5.0****

Private detective Cormoran Strike and his partner Robin Ellacott are tasked with investigating the disappearance of GP Margot Bamborough more than 40 years earlier. It was concluded 40 years ago that she was killed by a serial killer Dennis Creed who is now imprisoned. But Creed neither agreed nor denied killing Margot, whose body was never found.

The Police Detective, Talbot who investigated this case at that time, was convinced that Creed has killed Margot. But soon he had a breakdown and his notes on the case were full of astronomical symbols and tarot card markings. Strike and Robin just try to decipher and talk to people around who are still living and try to solve the case (which they solve at the end).

Personally I have always like the narration, slow, intertwined with Robin/Strike’s personal life and their other cases. Last book had a bit of dilemma on Robin and Strike’s relationship which I felt was annoying. Thankfully both are mature in this one 🙂
Very well written (as always), plot was good , worth 900+ pages. Highly recommended to those who like slow mysteries!!
